Dundee MP backs PCS civil service campaign

Dundee West MP Chris Law has backed PCS Trade Union workers in their ongoing dispute with the UK Government, following industrial action which saw thousands of civil servants on strike earlier this week.

Civil servants, including those who work in Dundee for the Department of Work and Pensions and HM Revenue and Customs, are covered by the Civil Service Pay Remit. Pay increases were limited to just 2% in 2022/23, despite inflation then running at 9%.

In a letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt MP, Mr Law backed calls for the UK Government to make additional funding available to employers for pay rises.

Chris Law, Dundee West MP said:

“In 2019 I met with local representatives from the PCS Union and was shocked to hear about the scale of challenges civil servants were then facing.

“With those civil servants also now facing a Tory-led, out-of-control cost-of-living crisis and rising inflation, it is simply unacceptable that they have been offered 2%.

“Many civil servants were already struggling to make ends meet – after they helped keep the country running through the COVID pandemic, it is only right that the UK Government now support them.

“I hope that the UK Government will see sense and ensure that civil servants receive a proper pay rise which reflects the current situation many households across the country currently face.”
