UK Government urged for reassurances over energy price rises following Ukraine invasion

The UK Government have been pressed to give reassurance to people across the UK that there will be no further rise to the energy price cap, following further global energy price rises as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

At a session of Business Questions in the House of Commons, Dundee West Chris Law MP called on the UK Government to make a statement as more families are expected to fall further into fuel poverty.

Energy regulator OFGEM announced earlier this year that the energy price cap would be raised by 50% from the beginning of April, potentially increasing bills by as much as £693.

Global energy prices are expected to rise further as further sanctions on Russia are introduced, following the unprecedented invasion of Ukraine today (24th February).

Dundee West MP Chris Law said:

“Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine will have devastating consequences, and I want to share my full support and solidarity both with the people of Ukraine, and those from Ukraine living in Dundee.

“Escalating global energy prices have already had an enormous impact on my local constituents, and stories about those on the lowest incomes are increasingly having to choose between heating their homes or feeding themselves and their families are sadly becoming more and more common.

“The UK Government must give them the necessary reassurance that the energy cap will not rise further as a result of these global energy price increases.”
