Dundee West MP Chris Law has backed calls for further UK Government support for the live events industry, joining hundreds of others recognising the importance of the sector as part of the #WeMakeEvents Day.
In a letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Law highlighted the precarious situation many involved in live events currently face and called on the Treasury to consider a sector-specific Job Support Scheme aimed at those in the industry.
Last week, the Chancellor announced his Winter Economy Plan, which included a Job Support Scheme for employers requiring them to pay a third of their employees’ wages to qualify for further Government wage support.
Chris Law MP said:
“Like many I look forward to the return of live music and performances in our city in the not-too distant future, but to see their return we must ensure that the industry can weather this storm.
“Sadly, I have heard from far too many people from Dundee’s live events industry over the last few weeks who are massively concerned about the future of the scene in our city and across the country.
“Unlike many other companies, those involved in live events have for the most part been unable to return to work, and with the UK Government now slowly pulling support for furloughed workers, there is a real threat that many of these companies will not survive long enough to re-open safely.
“The Chancellor must ensure that no-one is left behind and deliver for our live events venues and employers.”
