Dundee West MP Chris Law has called on the UK Government to not forget about UK tourists in Brexit negotiations, after it was revealed that six-month Visa-free access to the UK for EU citizens may not be reciprocated by the EU.
It is expected that the EU will offer only 90 days in any 180 rolling days travel without need for a Visa, in comparison to the six months travel without a Visa that EU citizens will be able to enjoy in the UK. These changes are set to begin from January 2021.
Over half a million UK citizens may be potentially affected each year if Visas are required for longer stays in the EU.
In a letter to Michael Gove MP, the UK Government Minister responsible for leading negotiations with the EU, Mr Law highlighted the concerns of his constituents that this will mean more restricted travel and more paperwork for British tourists, in addition to the potential consequence of higher costs due to long-term health insurance.
Chris Law MP said:
“We have all enjoyed the benefits of travel in the EU without a Visa, and I know that these changes will come as a shock to many across the UK.
“I share my constituents’ concerns that the UK’s negotiations team have not yet addressed the needs of tourists, and with the January 2021 date on the horizon and many planning for trips next year already, it is vital that they get clarity as soon as possible.
“It would be to the benefit of all if the UK would negotiate for reciprocal access to the EU, and I hope that they will look to do so over the coming months.”
